I keep finding myself going back to Mushy Mart to look at supplies.  They sell a lot in bulk, so if I am successful with my kit and want to produce larger quanties or different varieties, I can order supplies there.  They offer a range of supplies for beginners and experienced mushroom growers, so I think they are a company I could definately grow with.

I finally ordered a Portabella Mushroom Growing Kit from Amazon.com.  I can’t wait until it arrives.  I feel like a little kid waiting for the tooth fairy to come!  The warm spring weather we’ve been having reminded me of grilling prtabellas on the bbq, so I decided to search for portabella mushroom recipies.  I came across the traditional grilling recipes, but the most interesting recipie I found was for Stuffed Creamy Portabella Mushrooms.  This may not be the healthiest mushroom dish, but it sure sounds like a good treat!  If you happen to try it out before I do, let me know your thoughts.

I found a great video on YouTube about how to grow mushrooms, titled Grow Mushrooms from spores.  The simplistic video makes me think that it really isn’t that hard to grow edible mushrooms.  I just need to dive in and find the time to do it.  Oh- and I love the music on this video, too!

In my searches about how to grow mushrooms, I’ve found many different supplies and kits that are available over the internet. Let’s face it, most nurseries don’t supply mushroom growing kits. I know I’ll have to purchase something over the internet. I’m faced with many websites and products, and I’m not sure which ones are the best. So far, I’ve found Mushy Mart to be very helpful on the scientific aspect of growing mushrooms. They have a variety of supplies and look to be pretty creditable.  If anyone has had any experience with their kits, please let me know.

All I can think about is how to grow mushrooms!

Now that I am on this mushroom growing kick, it is ruling my life.  I can’t help but think about mushrooms 24/7.  I don’t want to read books, rent movies, or cook anything unless it involves mushrooms (check back on future posts for my favorite mushroom recipies) .  My husband decided to draw the line, though, when I rented the movie Matango:  Attack of the Mushroom People.  So, I think I’ll have to tone it down a bit.  Check out the movie, though.  I’m sure the producers were on drugs when they created it, but it’s still at the top of my charts.  You can even rent it for free from Greencine.com (a competiter to Netflix).  They actually have a free trial offer going on now, so you can click on the link below and rent it for free.  My husband and I have conflicting opinions about the movie, so please rent it and let me know what you think.  Granted, I may be a little biased, but I still think it deserves a spot on my Top 10 list.

Why I Want to Learn How to Grow Mushrooms

So, why do I want to learn how to grow mushrooms?  For starters, mushrooms are full of health benefits!  Of course, I always knew they were good for you, but it wasn’s until recently that I realized how good they are for you.  I’ll be providing more in depth health benefits of mushrooms in future posts, but for starters, mushrooms contain about 80-90 percent water and are very low in calories.  They are full of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, biotin, ascorbic acid and Vitamin D.  Maybe I should hop on the bandwagon and develop a mushroom diet.  It would have to be healthier than the Aitkin’s diet!

Another great learning tool I’ve found for growing mushrooms is the Let’s Grow Mushrooms Video.  It starts out very simple and takes you through step by step directions on how to grow mushrooms.  It also shows more advanced mushroom cultivation techniques used by commercial mushroom farms.  Even if you are using a mushroom growing kit, this video can help walk you through each step of the process.  I highly recommend it for your next movie night!

Great Book on How to Grow Mushrooms

mushroom-book.jpgI’m still in my research phase of mushroom growing and wanted to share a great book that I’ve found: “Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms” by Paul Stamets.  The internet is great, but sometimes I like a good old fashioned book.  I can keep it right next to my mushroom growing kit and flip through the pages if I have any questions.  The author gives simple directions, and it has tons of pictures - which I love.  If I ever get confused about the difference between a shiitake and an oyster mushrooms, I can look it up here.  This is a must have for anyone who wants to learn how to grow mushrooms.

When I told my best friend that I wanted to learn how to grow mushrooms (the edible kind), she said, “Why the heck would you want to grow fungus in your house?”  I wasn’t surprised at her reaction, though.  After all, she HATES mushrooms.  She can’t stand the fact that people actually like to eat fungus.  Never mind what she thinks, though.  I think it would be cool to grow my own mushrooms.  I know I can do it.  I like to garden and I am proud to grow my own vegetables.  I have friends that are into gardening.  My husband has a green thumb.  I know I can do it, but I’m just not sure how.  I’ve started to research it on the internet, and it does sound a little tricky.  So, I’ve decided to share my mushroom growing journey (along with tips and tricks that I’ve discovered along the way) in this blog.  If you want to learn how to grow mushrooms, you can learn with me and share your secrets here.
